The Summit

Crossthumb1 The SummitIn the Bible it reads in John 14:10 (KJV) “Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” It’s words vs. works. In the secular perspective it’s “actions speak louder than words.”

We’ve heard that a thousand times. How you act speaks volumes to who you are and what you represent. I have always believed the Bible is the road map to life and it never stops reminding me of that fact. I attended a new church today, well actually it’s not new but  it’s newly re-named. The Summit (formerly Second Baptist) has been around for fifty or so years and they are reaching deeper into the community and changing their views a bit. In the literal and spiritual sense.

I have been contemplating  and talking about leaving New Heights Christian Fellowship and finding a new church home. Not because of what NHCF has, but because of what they do not have. I enjoy Pastor Doug’s writing and his preaching style, I just feel I am in need of greater actions from myself and less verbiage. I want a church home that feeds your needs through a greater education process. Having an adult Sunday School  class is important to me and I have missed it over the last two years while attending NHCF. Read the rest of this entry »

Second Chance

Softball 300x300 Second ChanceIn our lives we are often given second chances. My second chance came fifteen years ago. I had recently been promoted to Regional Market Manager for the Mountain Region which is a damn big title so my business cards had no title at all. The reality was in Montana (Mountain Region), if I was the only one in the office and a delivery truck arrived with product, I was The Warehouseman. And if I walked through the office and a trash can was full, I was The Janitor. Or if the phone rang, I was The Receptionist. You get the point. In reality, the geographic aspect of the operation was huge, and the staff size was about fifteen to twenty.

Randy, one of the sales reps, asked if I played softball and invited me to join his church league team. This particular event turned out to be my second chance at life. He informed me that it was a Baptist church team, “But you don’t have to actually GO to the church to play on the team.” Well, I grew up Baptist and I did decide to begin attending the church. As it turned out, I liked it and attended regularly during the period I lived in Billings.

Sharing my thoughts on social media

6a01053593a874970c0120a6ebed48970b 300x250 Sharing my thoughts on social mediaThis last week I was invited to co-host Wright Stuff Radio and speak at Leadership Meridian. It was an opportunity to share my personal opinion on one of my passions. One of the key topics in today’s business environment is social media and much of  the focus was on that particular topic.

Leadership Meridian was not doing the typical Media Day presentations. I have had previous opportunities and addressed the classes of years past about Radio and its functionality. My presentation this year was different as I was asked to talk about two topics: The Blue Magazine and its inner workings and Blue Turf Nation my personal Boise State blog.

Ding!

doording Ding!On occasion I have used this blog as a vehicle to vent. The previous rants ironically were vehicle related as is this one. I can go back 27 years to a morning at Denny’s in Stockton California. It was 1983 and I know it well because I had just purchased my first vehicle. It was a brand new 1984 Nissan Truck. It was the first year for the new official Nissan name. The truck had both Nissan and Datsun on the tailgate. Funny the things we remember. As I was sitting enjoying breakfast I witnessed my first Ding! I was livid! I ran outside the restaurant and pointed out the new truck with temporary plates and asked “are you an idiot?” or something to that effect. Keep in mind I was a mere 21 year old lacking any diplomacy or tact. Such a confrontation today would present itself much differently. As I recall my breakfast was paid for and I was given $100 for the damage. Would I get breakfast and $100 today?

Devoted to something

AR027845.standalone.prod affiliate.36 300x224 Devoted to somethingI was given the opportunity to interview a couple that are as much in love with Boise State as they are with each other. Don and Velma began their life together in 1961 and have been attending Boise Junior College, Boise College and Boise State football and basketball games ever since. Nearly fifty years of dedicated attendance only missing a total of three games, two because of medial and one because of confusion as they had returned from a cruise and thought the game was an afternoon game it turned out it was an evening game and they could have made it there in plenty of time.

During this interview for an upcoming issue of The Blue magazine one word came to mind as I listened to their story. That word is devotion. There are several meanings for devotion and the one I’m referring to is profound dedication. What an amazing story of their lives and their devotion to Boise State athletics. I don’t want to share anymore of their story as you can read about it in the August 2010 edition of The Blue magazine.

I thought I was a devoted fan of Boise State, but not by the profound dedication standards they have set. So, I began to examine my life and I have nothing that I am that devoted to, nothing by their standards. I was in awe of such a characteristic and quite envious. My question begs an answer or at least consideration; can anyone become that devoted to something? It’s time to raise the bar in my life, how about you?

about dotme

I'm a sales consultant for The Blue magazine, the official publication for Boise State Athletics and I love my job.

I classify myself to be a practicing blogger, a college football junkie, a lover of sushi, a soccer dad and a student of social media!

I am pretty much a homebody but you will find me at church on Sundays, at most country concerts and on occasion at a local play or the symphony. You will always find me at Boise State sporting events and every once in awhile at my favorite golf course.

I think I'm in desperate need of a new hobby, maybe I'll take up blogging.
